The 2020 First Quarter of Uganda Film Industry at a glance.

It’s indeed a long years break but wish for my return no more, your prayers have been answered.


It’s 2nd February 2020 and this month comes with blessings, our film blog has awakened.


Alot has been happening in the industry ever since we took a break, we won’t go back to the past so we’ll get it started right from here.


The 2020 Film Calendar has been laid out already with a couple of films Premiering and screening at various locations starting this February.


1. Love Faces


This 2018 award-winning RomCom Drama from Producer, Writer and Director Usama Mukwaya is to hit screens again this February as a Valentine’s package for Moses Sserugo’s African Movie Night Platform that showcases African films every Tuesday at the National Theatre from 6PM at various ticket rates. This will show on 4th and 11th February from 7:30 PM at 10,000 UGX only.


About Love Faces:
A young vibrant couple dealing with relationship issues witnesses extraordinary scenarios that change their lives forever.


Synopsis:
Sherry decides to breakup with her longtime love Joshua after a disagreement. The ruckus is intervened by Joshua’s best friend Salim who wants them to make peace while Maria, Sherry’s workmate also shows up to help her move out. When Maria and Salim are away, a burglar breaks into the house with Joshua and Sherry both in. Joshua realizes after the incident that he still loves his woman and wants to do everything to take all that has happened back; only that Sherry has already made up her mind to leave.

Moses Kiboneka Jr., Laura Kahunde, Patriq Nkakalukanyi, Salome Elizabeth
This movie is a must watch.


2. Circles
This is a 2019 feature film by a first time female Producer and Director Hellen Nagawa showing how HIV/AIDs can spread in a small circle of friends, the film scooped a nomination for Best Indigenous Film Category at the recently concluded Uganda Film Festival 2019.


This film is showing again on Wednesday 5th February as a Valentine’s package for Uganda Cinema Night Platform which happens every first Wednesday of every month showing Ugandan movies from 6PM at 10,000 UGX only.
The film features Micheal Ssegujja, Musinguzi Godfrey, Edson Keith Abitegeka and More.

3. KEMI – The Final Tragedy
Amongst the film to be released this year is KEMI, a film which has only come out publicly in January 2020 announcing it’s release as the International Women’s Day on Sunday 8th March 2020, this is produced by Aisha Kyomuhangi a famous stage and screen actress who is commonly known from Bakayimbira Dramactors and has graced screens on shows like Mistakes Gals Do, Honorablez, Half London and so on. The film is directed by Kizito Samuel Saviour and basing on the trailers released so far, it’s evident that Aisha Kyomuhangi takes the lead in the story where she featured other star cast like Symon Base Kalema known from Theatre Factory, Mutebi Farooq, Edson Keith Abitegeka, Keloy Kemigisha and Allen Musumba among others.

This film is to be premiered and show at the Mbarara based Country Cinema Mbarara where it will have it’s VIP Red Carpet Premiere from 6PM priced at 30,000 UGX followed by screening at the same venue from 8th to 15th March according to the promotional material shared recently.

KEMI Logline: [Short Synopsis]
Kemi is forced to let go of her newly born baby after realizing that she could lose it through the struggle but her motherly heart can’t let go.

4. November Tear
This is a film whose release date has been getting postponed since the year 2018 when it was expected to be released but information from Mr. Nondo Richard from Jephin Films who is the director and producer of the film recently confirmed it’s coming out this year.

Synopsis…
November Tear, a feature film of a young girl forced out of their home, now faces the harsh conditions of the world outside her world.
Cast: Daphne Ampire, Mushema Housen, Joel Okuyo Atiku Prynce, Raymond Rushabiro, Cindy sanyu
The actual confirmed release date, venue and prices of the release of this film have not been fully confirmed but it’s expected to show in Uganda at the Country Cinema Mbarara late March.

5. August
August film by Rhonnie Nkalubo Abraham was first seen at the Uganda Film Festival 2019 where it competed in a number of categories and managed to scoop Best Cinematography and Best Production Design awards.This is a film about a fictional African culture where August the lead of the story is put to a test with his White finance amidst his culture that commands him to marry the widow of his late brother, he has to fight for his culture at the same time not loose his fiance due to the norms he finds hilarious as a person.
The film is expected to be released on 27th March at Acacia Mall based Century Cinemax but more details haven’t been released yet.
It features reputable actors like Aisha Kyomuhangi, Jaubar Zziwa Ddungu, Nelon Gerald, Eron Ntuulo and more.

6. The Girl In The Yellow Jumper.
This is probably the most anticipated film of 2020 by reputable filmmaker Loukman Ali who has set a mark and recognition based on how compelling he tells stories visually, a stunning teaser trailer of this film was released on YouTube in 2019 followed by posters who marked the release date as 18th April 2020, more about this film is still being shared via it’s Facebook page.
It’s a story about a guy who gets kidnapped and later returns to narrate an unbelievable story (that’s as far as the Director can elaborate about his film)
It features great actors like Michael Wawuyo Senior, Micheal Wawuyo Junior, Phillip Luswata, Maurice Kirya, Nkakalukanyi Patrick, Rehema Nanfuka, Gladys Oyenbot and more surprise faces.
There we go, the first quarter of 2020 is already confirmed with awesome films I believe everyone in Uganda should not miss.


Additionally, this year the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) awakened and it’s anticipated to happen in March, this February 6th will be the unveiling of the nomination list and as Ugandans we pray that Uganda gets represented again this time like how it happened last year where Uganda had over 9 nominees despite the fact that they didn’t bring home any accolade after loosing the Best Movie East Africa to Kenya’s 18 Hours. This Is Uganda Short Film Competition
The highlight of 2020 kicked off as Ugandan Hollywood actor Ntare Mbaho Guma Mwine opened up a This Is Uganda short film competition as a good will tourism ambassador for Uganda Tourism Board.The short film competition is being established as a tool to have filmmakers create as much content showing how positive and great Uganda is for any tourist and investors to attract them to come to Uganda and Ntare put up a prize for this to inspire and encourage as many fimmakers to compete for this competition and use the prize to better their filmmaking careers on the other hand.
Here are the criteria for joining the This Is Uganda Short Film Competition along with answers to some common questions.

You have
3 months
to make
a 5 minute short film
inspired by the theme
This is Uganda

Open to all Ugandans
To create any story large or small
That takes place in Uganda
Feel free to submit
An Experimental short film
Or a Dramatic short film
Or a Comic short film
Or a Documentary short film

The only limits are your imagination and your film has to be 5 minutes or less.

Below are answers to some frequently asked questions.

1. What is the submission deadline?
• The deadline for submissions is now April 15th, 2020.

2. How do I submit my film?
• Films can be submitted by emailing a private link of your film to tiu@bewareoftime.com. Do not post your film on any public websites till the competition is completed.

3. What language can the film be in?
• Films can be in any Ugandan language. Films may also be in Swahili, English or a combination of the above. Kindly provide subtitles for dialogue that is not in english.

4. In terms of length of the short film, does this include the end credits? Or can we use the 5 minutes to tell the story and then have a bit more time for the credits.
• The entire length of the film including end credits needs to be 5 minutes or less.

5. Can I submit multiple entries?
• Yes!

6. Can I make a short film using my phone?
• Yes! We encourage you to make your short film by any means necessary.

7. What happens once I submit my film?
• Your film will be entered into the first “This Is Uganda Short Film Competition” Your film will be viewed by a panel of select judges,myself, Fibby Kioria and Loukman Ali. Cash prizes will be awarded for Best Short Film and to the Best Female Director. Winners of the inaugural competition will also receive widespread exposure. Ntare has pledged $1000 toward the prize money and is crowdfunding to try to raise the prize to $5000 for Best Short Film and $5000 for Best Female Director.

8. Why is Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine putting together this competition?
• Ntare has always been passionate and dedicated to his motherland Uganda. He was recently appointed as Uganda’s Goodwill Cultural Tourism Ambassador. Part of his mission as Ambassador is to market and promote the talents of Ugandan’s and its beautiful landscape. As a working artist Ntare felt compelled to put together the This Is Uganda Short Film Competition to give Ugandan artists a new platform to compete and gain widespread exposure through.

9. Does the short film for the This Is Uganda Short Film Competition need to be filmed in Uganda?
• Yes, films submitted for competition need to be made in Uganda by Ugandans.

10. When will the winners be announced and cash prizes be awarded?
• Winners of the This Is Uganda Short Film Competition will be announced and cash prizes dispursed on or before May 31st, 2020.
